About the Department

Brief Description About The Department

The Department of English was established in 2001 and it offers Technical English and Communication Skills to the students of B.E., B.Tech., MBA & MCA. The Department has a rich tradition, a glorious past and a glorious present. A galaxy of distinguished scholars serves as the faculty of the Department. Prof. Chenniappan, Dean-Paavai Institutions, a retired Principal,  had transformed the department with his knowledge. The department has organized BEC courses to the faculty and the students. The department is conducting English rallies to create awareness about the importance of English among the students. Dr. R.Shanthi is the Head of the Department leading the faculty in the right path.

We live in a society; a society cannot survive without communication. Communication is necessary to maintain interpersonal relationship and to live a meaningful life. Mastery of English or a command over English will fetch us respect among the society and it will be very helpful for our career prospects. Any amount of academic scholarship or technical knowledge without communication is of no use.

In the present competitive world, a sound knowledge of English Communication Skills is very essential and indispensable; and it plays a crucial role in the job market. So, all the engineering students are expected to acquire fluency in communication to improve their spoken English.

English Communication Laboratory

Realizing the need of the day, Paavai Engineeirng College has set an English Communication Laboratory having 60 systems with Internet and Headphone facilities to meet out the basic requirements to learn English. A class of 60 to 65 students can simultaneously improve pronunciation and the basic grammar of English Language by making use of the Globerana Software installed. The students are nurtured with LSRW skills in English Language. They are trained in both English and Career Lab. In English lab, they meet out with the vocabulary, Grammar, Comprehension Passages, Report Writing, Letter Writing and Proposal Writing. In Career Lab, they learn about Presentation Skills, Group Discussion and Interview Skills.

English Grove:

A step has been taken to display certain English language items such as vocabulary, idioms and phrases, usages, riddles, wise-sayings, basic grammar, construction of simple sentences on every notice board of Paavai Institutions. Four pages of English language material is prepared and displayed every week in order to help the students and the staff members learn new language items and recollect and retain what they have already learnt. This activity is going on successfully for the past three years and it has got its own tremendous impact on the Paavaites.

Aptis Esol:

Aptis ESOL is an English language qualification designed and developed by British Council language testing experts. It is regulated by the Office of Qualifications and Examinations Regulation (Ofqual) in England. It assesses English language proficiency in all four skills: speaking, listening, reading and writing, at all levels from A1 to C2 on the CEFR and the Grammar and Vocabulary. Aptis ESOL is computer based exam under strict security. This allows us to guarantee the reliability of test taker’s results. Aptis ESOL certifies the English level according to the Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR) and meets the language requirements of the organisation.

Linguaskill:

Linguaskill is an accurate and convenient online test to help institutions check their  students’ English language level. It measures the 4 skills, and is powered by AI. Linguaskill comes with an option of all 4 skills or a specific skill assessment and can be taken by the students at the comfort of their home. Preparing for the proposed assessment shall lead to enhanced English language skill of the students and this further leads to Cambridge tag on their profile.

BEC:

Having in mind the dire necessity of gaining mastery over English, the Chairman prompted the English department to conduct Business English Certificate (BEC) course for the staff as well as the students. This Cambridge University certificate is globally recognized and it has world-wide validity. Moreover, it has been fixed as the minimum criteria for the eligibility even to apply for any post in certain world renowned institutions and organizations. By and large, the English department, with right spirit, has so far guided and helped twelve batches of nearly 720 teachers and 40 students to obtain the BEC Preliminary Certificate and BEC (Vantage).

English Club:

The English Club of Paavai is doing its job effectively and efficiently. It strives to bring out the latent talent of the students by way of organizing and conducting various activities and competitions like Quiz, Presentation, Oratorical Contest, Essay Writing Contest, etc., with an aim of making the students taste the flavor of English language.

A galaxy of senior teachers and experienced retired professors in the English department of Paavai institutions have been assigned the responsibility of creating a right kind of climate and to improve the spoken English of the students and to accomplish the desired results.
